First things first: you should know the basics of roleplaying before joining an RPG! Roleplaying is the creation of storylines by multiple people who control different characters in the storyline. This forum is dedicated to a specific type of roleplaying, called text-based roleplaying, which-- you guessed it-- means that it's done purely through text! Still confused? Think of it as writing a joint story with lots of other people.
Roleplaying is usually conducted in 3rd person. A user posts with a paragraph that describes their character's actions in response to the previous post. Not that hard, uh?
Now, there are several levels of roleplay: chatroom, simple, semi-literate, and literate. Chatroom roleplay usually takes place in a chatroom and consists of something like this: "Sally: *waves* Hi!"
Simple roleplay requires actual sentences, but one-liners are accepted and posts usually do not exceed 5 sentences.
Semi-literate roleplay, also referred to as semi-lit, usually requires fairly good grammar, and posts range in length from 3 sentences to 2 paragraphs.
Literate roleplay, sometimes also known as lit or "heavy" roleplay, is much more descriptive, and usually consists of several long paragraphs per post.
SHFR usually sticks to Semi-literate, unless otherwise specified in the thread.
Here is some common roleplaying lingo you may want to know:
OOC - means "out of character"
IC - means "in character"
char/charrie - short for character
NPC - means "non-playable character," e.g. minor characters that don't specifically belong to someone
plot - a predefined outline of events that roleplayers agree to follow
SANT - means "start a new thread"
PIP - means "post in progress," usually used when chatting or roleplaying in real-time
SIP - means "SANT in progress," less commonly used
If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask! We're here to help you have a good time, of course. Also, if you feel that I've missed something important, please PM me.
